How art originated?

What is art, and how it came to the museum? What are the rules at the museum? How the exhibits differ: by age, features, why are they preserved and protected today? We will talk about the necessary materials for artworks, methods, and types.

The game of the primitive man

What do we know about primitive art, what were the first paintings, and where were they found? What material did the primitive man use to paint? During the practical part of the class, we will draw on the museum's underground cave walls- the grotto, just like primitive man did.

Egyptian boy. The proportions of humans in ancient Egypt.

What cultural monuments of Ancient Egypt we know? What is canon, and why the art of Ancient Egypt did not change for centuries? What are the features of depicting a man in ancient Egypt? During the practical part of the lesson, we will draw an Egyptian boy on a drawn grid.

Gods and heroes of Greece. We are building the Parthenon.

Who were the main heroes of Ancient Greek myths? To who were dedicated ancient temples and works of art; what are the temple's constituent elements? We will draw the Parthenon, listing the temple's main features during the practical part of the class.

The stained-glass windows of gothic cathedrals. We will draw castles and cathedrals.

When the stained glass appeared – the paintings form the multicolour glass; what is it a gothic cathedral, and what are its main elements? During the practical part of the lesson, we will draw a cathedral with multi-coloured windows.

Madonnas of the Renaissance. We learn from the masters of the Renaissance.

What is the Renaissance; what are the main features of the Renaissance? What is the difference between iconic painting and religious painting? During the practical part of the lesson, we will draw a copy of the Renaissance profile portrait reproduction.

Romanticism and self-portrait.

Main differences between classicism and romanticism; what is most important for artists of the romantic period. What is the difference between self-portrait and portrait? We will draw self-portrait during the practical part of the lesson, trying to depict our character.

How the landscape appeared. Realism.

Realism is an artistic movement; the difference between landscape and other artistic movements; how the artist inserts his state of mood in the landscape painting. During the practical part of the lesson, we will draw our landscape- mood.

Still life in the style of cubism.

Who are artists-cubists; still life is a primary genre of cubism; what other elements can be added to the cubism painting. We will draw a still life during the practical part of the lesson, trying to decompose the depicted three-dimensional object into simple elements and assemble it on the canvas in a two-dimensional image.

Point, line, spot. We draw music.

How abstract art originated? What Vasyli Kandinsky was trying to convey in his artworks; why abstract art is so popular nowadays? During the practical part of the lesson, we will listen to music, and with the help of dots, lines, and spots, we will be conveying the mood of the music.

Nature and man. Henri Matisse (1869–1954)

The participants will learn about nature and person, naturalness and beauty of the human body. We will try to find the answer to the question: "How does heaven look?". In the example of Gerasim Golovkov's painting "Oaks," we will talk about the liberation of color and Fauvism. We will think, in the museum's halls, about European painting and the Odesa school. In the practical lesson, we will consider the works of Henri Matisse and will draw in his style.

Suprematist compositions. Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935)

Square, circle, triangle: how is the world of objects were divided into constituent parts and something new was created from them – participants will learn about this and much more during the theoretical part of the class. And during the practical part, they will consider suprematist compositions and draw people like Malevich did.

The atmosphere of Paris. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)

The participants will get to know the tenderness and charm of the "blue" and "rose" Picasso's periods. They will be told about circus performers, gymnasts, wandering artists, and why the "Girl on the Ball" does not fall. We will get inspired by Paris's atmosphere in the early 20th century, thanks to the painting by Alexander Murashko "Paris Café". During the practical part of the class, we will consider the works of Pablo Picasso and draw our "Girl on the Ball".

Italian traditions. Amedeo Modigliani's style (1884-1920)

Participants will get to know Italian traditions on the example of unforgettable female portraits of Amedeo Modigliani. Together we will discover common grounds of his style and iconography. In a practical lesson, we will study Modigliani's works and draw a female portrait in his style.

Let's fly together. Marc Chagall (1887-1985)

If the person is in love, can she or he fly? Why people on the Marc Chagall's paintings are flying? We will propose young participants to fly together with them.
We will discover artwork by Marc Chagall during the practical class and will draw flying animals and people.

Space or abstractionism. Joan Miró (1893-1983)

We will tell what abstractionism is and how it looks like. Participants will get to know the figurative but pointless art and a little bit about Dadaism and wooden grasshoppers. In the practical lesson, we will consider Joan Miró and try to draw the starry sky in his style.

Absolute and complete silence. Mark Rothko (1903-1970)

Interestingly, can the painting depict nothing, or how does nothing look? Absolute and complete silence, only color – about this, we will talk with our young participants.
And on the practical lesson, we will discover the painting of Mark Rothko and draw our Absolute.

The modern sculpture. Henry Moore (1898–1986).

Do you want to sculpt the King and Queen? Easy. The modern sculpture, monumental form, how the whole and details are related – the participants will learn about it in the museum's halls and on the example of sculpture from the museum's collection. During the practical part of the class, we will study the works of Henry Moore and, most importantly, sculpt.

The Lost World of Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966)

Do you know how to create a sculpture with no dimension? What is loneliness, and how to portray it? Participants will look at modern sculptures in the museum yard and try to answer the same question - is it just a frame or a person who got lost in the world. In the practical lesson, we will work with the works of Alberto Giacometti and create sculptures of humans and dogs.

Art Nouveau architecture. Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928- 2000)

A fairy-tale city or a city of the future, how the architect makes his fantasies come to life, precedes these vivid fantasies – about this, we will talk with participants and a bit about modern architecture. During the practical part of the class, we will look at the building of Friedensreich Hundertwasser and create our Wonderland (it seems that this is not yet taught even at the Faculty of Fine Arts).
